Story Writing in Senior Infants: Well Done Kyle

At the beginning of the month

Kyle was writing good stories:

Once upon a time, there lived a teddy

who was talking,

who lived in a toy box.

They went to the North Pole.

They had a happy time.

He worked hard all month and now is writing great stories.

Once upon a time there lived Miss Sunshine.

She was stacking boxes on her shelves.

Just then a robber stole all the shelves.

So she called the police

but when the police got there

the police couldn’t see anything.

Then Miss Sunshine saw burglars.

Speaking of that…

some other things were missing.

As well Mr Happy’s pet was gone

and Miss Scary’s bed was gone

and they called the police,

the fire brigade

and the rescue helicopter

and they did it.

Once upon a time Mr Mo went to get a job.

He tried a fireman,

bus driver,

teacher,

police

but they were no use,

so he went back home

and that was Nonsense Land

to ask Mr Silly.

‘Be a garden,’ said Mr Silly.

So he had flowers on his shoulder

and blue bells on his head

and banana flowers of his nose.

Who ever heard of banana flowers?

They’re in Nonsense Land

and you can eat them.

Once upon a time there lived some bread

that was being sliced.

Mr Tickle and Miss Magic they didnn’t need a knife.

Miss Magic wayed her magic wand …

and presto it was sliced

but the magic went right down the stairs

and out the door.

It sliced jam on Mr Small but he didn’t mind

he was red all ready.

Then it spread.

Mr Happy had butter on his head.

Mr Strong had egg on his eggs.

If even dropped a toaster on Mr Jelly’s house

and did you know Mr Tickle

and Little Miss Magic didn’t know

but they didn’t not know that for long

because finally the magic

sliced an egg on Mr Tickle’s arms.

Once upon a time there lived Mr Skinny.

One day someone was knocking at his door.

He opened the door…

and there stood two loaves of bread.

They had eyes,

a nose,

and even mouth.

They walked straight in

but Mr Skinny’s wasn’t a house,

he was in a hotel

so if the bread walked in

then it will be a disaster.

Mr Greedy gobbled them up.

Well done Kyle. Keep up the good work.

On the 18th June Nicole started writing a story.

You can read it HERE.

The main character in her story was called Scarlet.

Over the Summer, Nicole wrote a further instalment

and here it is ….

Scarlet went back home.

Then when she said good night, she fell fast asleep.

The book was on her head trying to tell her something.

She had a dream about The Spirits.

She woke up and saw the book.

She saw something about The Spirits.

It said ‘Three kids have been taken by The Spirits and…

YOU are …

NEXT!

Scarlet closed the book

but her hand got stuck

then she got sucked in the book.

Fire was there.

Pages were flying everywhere.

It was magic.

Scarlet was able to grab a branch.

Then she climbed up the branch,

and there was was a little door.

She went through the door and …

Oh wait there were two doors.

They both said:

‘Pick me! Pick me!’

Aaaah! said Scarlet.

She nearly had a heart attack.

But which one should I pick?

‘Wait’ she said to the doors.

‘Where will I go?’

 The first door said

‘Home’.

Door Number Two whispered…

‘Come closer …

Pass through me

and you will find The Spirits’.

‘Ok,’ said Scarlet.

‘I pick Door Number Two’.

She opened the door

and she was not at home.

She was ONE step closer

to finding The Spirits.

‘YES finally I can find The Spirits

and make this thing stop for once

and for all’.

‘Now where should I go? ‘

Right, I think’.

Off she went.

‘Oh no, a river.

How can I get across?

Then a Spirit passed her way.

‘Come with me,’ he demanded.

‘No,’ said Scarlet.

‘I insist’, said The Spirit.

‘Ok fine.

I will come with you’.

The Spirit took her to a dark and gloomy place.

‘Give me your soul,’ The Spirit said.

‘Never. I won’t,’ said Scarlet

Then out of nowhere a girl came.

‘Here is MY soul’, she said.

‘No don’t do it,’ cried out Scarlet

but it was too late, The Spirit

took her spirit and the little girl

fell to the ground.

‘You are so mean,’ said Scarlet.

‘I am sorry,’ said The Spirit.

I do not control myself.

My oldest brother does.

‘Wait said Scarlet.

You must be that kid…

who got lost’.

‘Yes I am’, replied The Spirit.

‘I’m not sure if I believe you’.

‘Well I am not lying.’

‘What……..? I can’t hear you……’ answered Scarlet.

Then Scarlet fell out of that dark place

and landed in the river.

Meanwhile back in the dark cave …

little did Scarlet know

but the little  girl was

The Spirit’s middle child.

‘Good work Sis,’ said The Spirit.

‘Thank you Bro, answered the girl.

‘Wait, we have not got her soul yet.

It is our job to get kids’ souls.

It has been our job for the last thousand years’…

Children’s Writing: ‘Terry the Pteradon discovers his talent’ by Jack aged 6

Once upon a time there lived …

a Pteradon.

Let’s call him Terry.

He had a short tail

but the most important thing

about Terry the Pteradon

was that he had giant wings.

He lived in a messy nest on a dark cliff.

It was like a bird’s nest only bigger.

It was made of sticks and feathers.

He had two friends.

Their names were Dippy and Dopey.

They were both Diplodocuses

and belonged to the sauropod family.

Terry thought he had no talent.

Dippy and Dopey had water power.

They were born with this talent.

They could squirt water out of their tails.

If there was a fire tornado in Dinoville,

they could come to the rescue.

Terry the Pteradon had hunter fish talents.

But he didn’t know this yet.

Pteradons can swoop down very fast

and the fish don’t see them coming,

but Terry hadn’t discovered that yet.

Along came a prehistoric snake called Titanoboa.

A Titanoboa would eat a T Rex for breakfast.

Dippy and Dopey whacked their tails on the ground.

This was a sign that they could sense danger.

A Titanoboa would eat them for lunch.

Terry the Pteradon came to the rescue.

He discovered his hunter fish talents.

He swooped down very fast

and the Titanoboa didn’t see him coming,

The snake was caught by surprise

and he slid away.

Dippy and Dopey were grateful to their friends

and Terry was happy that he had discovered his talent.

CHAPTER ONE

‘It was just a normal night.

Dark sky.

Stars.

Everything was just right …

until this very night.

A little girl, called Scarlet was fast asleep.

Suddenly she woke right up.

She saw a flash of golden light.

She leapt out of bed

and then crept slowly,

following the golden path

she could see in front of her

leading her down the stairs

to the hall.

She let herself out through

the front door

and went along her garden path,

down the the bottom of the road,

over the hill

and through a deep forest.

Now everyone knows

a child should not go somewhere,

in the middle of the night,

by themselves.

Well Scarlet BROKE that RULE.

Then the golden light was gone.

The path was gone.

‘Why would you take me here’, she wondered,

just to disappear?

As if in answer the golden light reappeared.

It led her to a place in the middle of the forest,

where there was a book.

Then a light whisper in her ear came to her.

It said;

‘Bring back the spirits’.

Scarlet wasn’t quite sure what to do.

Maybe the answer was in the book.

She would get the book and see what

‘Bring back the spirits’ could mean.

So she reached out for the book…’

BUT when she tried to pick it up,

her hand passed right through it!

Scarlet gasped. She threw pebble at it.

The book said ‘Ouch’,

but the pebble didn’t fall through the book.

Then suddenly the book disappeared.

The next day, she went back into the forest

and back to the same place she had seen the book.

There was no trace of it.

For the rest of the day,

all Scarlet could think about was the book.

CHAPTER TWO

When she was about to get into bed that night,

Scarlet saw the light again

and she crept outside.

This time the light was even closer to her house,

but this time the light was red.

Scarlet knew this meant danger…

The book hissed,

‘Don’t touch me.’

It went flying down the path

and followed the golden light,

but then when Scarlet came out the door,

the golden light was not there anymore.

She tried to follow the path

where she last saw the golden light.

Then she came to a dead end.

There was no way in or out.

She tried and tried

but she couldn’t find a way out.

Scarlet felt herself being pulled.

Scarlet screamed.

A deep voice said;

‘How did you get here?

Come into the light.’

Scarlet saw a funny little goblin.

‘Come into my house,’ offered the goblin.

Scarlet followed the friendly  goblin

through a tiny door

into a little mushroom,

but it was so big inside with a big sitting room.

‘The kitchen is this way,’ said the goblin.

‘Wow’, thought Scarlet.

‘I thought this place was going to be miniature

and look how spacious it is.

‘You look thirsty’, said the goblin.

‘I am’, replied Scarlet.

‘Have something to drink’, said the goblin.

‘You look sad’, said the goblin.

‘I am,’ answered Scarlet.

‘This has got to cheer you up’, said the goblin,

‘I will tell you the secret of this place’.

Scarlet cheered up immediately,

‘Oh yes?’

‘You have been chosen’,

said the goblin,

‘to go on a mission.

Follow this path.

Bring back the spirits

and save the world’.

‘There’s been some mistake,’

protested Scarlet unhappily.

‘I am only eight’

‘Sorry I can’t help you’,

said the goblin apologetically,

‘YOU have been chosen’.

CHAPTER THREE

Suddenly the goblin’s voice

seemed very far away

and his kitchen faded.

Scarlet found herself in the lonely forest again.

On the forest floor in front of her was the book.

But when Scarlet went to pick up the book

it floated.

Scarlet put her hand under the book.

As soon as that happened the book

came down into her hand.

Then it opened on the index page

and Scarlet looked up ‘spirits’.

Scarlet found the answer was right in front of her,

and knew what she had to do.

‘You have been chosen’, whispered the book.

Scarlet took the book tightly in her hand

and made for home.

But that voice had not done talking.

It said ‘Keep the book safe,

VERY VERY SAFE because the spirits are in the book’.

Suddenly Scarlet noticed there was no sound.

The birds had stopped singing.

Scarlet was scared.

She stepped forward

and she fell into a hole

that suddenly appeared in the ground.

Down,

down

down,

Scarlet was screaming at the very top of her voice.

She found herself in an underground cave.

She couldn’t see anything

as it was as dark as the black night sky.

Suddenly the moon seemed to appear

from behind a cloud

and Scarlet could see by its light.

A tree moved.

Its branches reached out

to grab Scarlet.

Scarlet moved quickly,

but she tripped over

a root of the tree

and fell to the ground.

CHAPTER FOUR

In her dreams Scarlet saw the book in front of her.

When she reached out to touch it,

the floated up and lit up her face

like golden stars.

The book had a face on it and said;

‘He’s coming!’

Then it faded away and

a dark shadow appeared.

It was a WIZARD.

‘Get out of my forest or else’,

the wizard called.

‘Or else what?’ said Scarlet.

‘He will come’ answered the wizard.

‘Who?’ asked Scarlet.

‘Barnabus’, replied the Wizard.

Scarlet’s hand went right through the book.

Scarlet gasped.

The wizard was right beside her.

‘What are you doing with that?’

‘I was just looking … ‘

‘You should not be here,’ bellowed the wizard.

‘Now you will pay’.

Suddenly the wizard

magicked up some angry elves.

They had sharp swords.

But suddenly,

by magic another sword

was in Scarlet’s hand,

but she was scared anyway.

Scarlet ran and ran…

and straight into another goblin.

Hello little girl, croaked the goblin.

Come into my house,’ he said.

Scarlet followed the goblin through a little door

in the trunk of a narrow tree,

but it was so big inside.

‘This way,’ said the goblin.

‘Impressive’, thought Scarlet.

‘You look hungry’, growled the goblin.

‘I am’, said Scarlet.

‘Have something to eat’, said insisted goblin.

Scarlet had some tasty cake to eat

‘I have something I think you should know,’

the strange goblin crowed.

It is that I’m actually a Bad Goblin

and you have just eaten enchanted cake

that will send you to the Valley of Dreams

Oh and by the way

My name is Barnabus.’

‘Just as well this is only a dream’, thought Scarlet.

CHAPTER FIVE

Scarlet woke up with a sore head.

The book that had caused all this trouble,

was beside her on the ground.

Scarlet opened the book slowly.

Spirits came flying out.

Fire,

Water

and Air

The first one warmed her,

but did not burn her.

The middle one sprayed her

with little drops of fresh water.

The last one blew Scarlet to the ground.

The book gave out an evil laugh

and said in a hoarse whisper,

‘You have to defeat all my spirits first.

Then you have to battle ME!

Scarlet sighed.

She was tired,

but Scarlet knew from looking up the index

how to manage the spirits

and get them to return to the book.

She also knew that the book

was not telling the truth.

It was powerless without

the spirits.

There would be no battle.

‘PLEASE’, she said to the spirits

‘PLEASE return to the book.’

The spirits of

Fire,

Water

and Air

returned to the book

and the book slammed shut,

angry because it knew

it had lost

and was now powerless.

‘Haven’t you forgotten something?’

a voice whispered.

‘Oh yes’ said Scarlet

‘THANK YOU!’.

After that everything was back to normal …

Until the next time.

And THANK YOU too,

for reading our story.

2nd Class Room 6 collaborated to write this story.

We were inspired by a ‘story starter’ that Nicole wrote.

Nicole gave this story the interesting title

of ‘Scarlet’s Book’.

Children’s Writing; ‘Scarlet’s Book’ – How Does It End?

This writing project started when Nicole wrote

a very interesting opening to a story,

she called ‘Scarlet’s Book’.

Many of the class continued on with the story here.

Now we are working on how the story might end;

Julia wrote;

Scarlet ran and ran but she tripped over a rock and went flying down the mountain. She bashed her head and she fell asleep. When she woke up she found herself in bed.  Was it all a dream? But no, she had a bump on her head. It hadn’t been a dream.

This was JC’s idea;

When Scarlet was walking down the path through the misty forest, she suddenly heard a sound. She ran and ran. Then suddenly she stopped. There was a small stone wall in front of her. Then suddenly the book was behind her. She tried to get over the wall and failed. She tried again and got over the wall. The book floated over too. It was a race. Could Scarlet get safely home before the book? She tried to block the book, but it was too strong. The book had the spirits with it, so Scarlet called to the spirits. She hissed ‘Block the book with stones and rocks’. The spirits did as they were told. The book was blocked, but not for long. The book broke free and tried and tried to catch up with Scarlet. The book was getting closer. Scarlet was in the house, before the book. She locked the door. At last she was safe and home.

Niamh and Shauna gave the story this ending;

Scarlet opened the book slowly. Ghosts and spirits came flying out. A gust of spirits blew Scarlet to the ground. The book gave out an evil laugh and said in a hoarse whisper, ‘You have to defeat all my spirits first. Then you have to battle ME! More spirits floated out of the book. Scarlet sighed. She was tired, but Scarlet know she had to get all the evil spirits back in the book. The first spirit Scarlet found was ‘Fire.’  Scarlet captured it and put it in the book. Scarlet collected all the evil spirits back in the book. After that everything was back to normal … Until the next time.

Clara wrote;

Scarlet reached into the book and then the book shouted, ‘Take your hands off me !’ Then the book trapped Scarlet’s hands between its pages and pulled her into the book. She was dragged into an ancient land. The voice in the book shouted, ‘You will stay here for a hundred years. There was a castle… Here it is. Scarlet had a plan. She would be troublesome and then they’d have to send her home.

Max predicted;

Scarlet took the book in her hand and the book pulled out of her hand and floated away. Scarlet chased the book and then suddenly she crashed into a tree. Suddenly she woke up and found herself in a goblin jail in a goblin tree. She banged on the window with anger and suddenly the window broke and she crept out of the prison in the goblin tree.

But when Scarlet touched the book, it floated up and lit up her face like golden stars and the book had a face on it and said; ‘He’s coming!’ Then it faded away and a gleaming shadow appeared. Cian thought this is what happened next;

The next morning Scarlet went to school,  she brought the book with her. She opened it. A voice in her ear whispered ‘Pick a page’. Scarlet picked the page with the castle on it. She reached out and touched the picture. The book closed on her hand. It sucked her in. She was forbidden to return to Earth.

But when Scarlet went to pick up the book it floated. Scarlet put her hand under the book. As soon as that happened the book came down on her hand. Then it opened on the index page and Scarlet looked up ‘spirits’. Scarlet found the answer was right in front of her, and she soon had done what she was told.

Scarlet read the page in front of her. It said a long time ago, there was a spirit. The spirit was around for one thousand years. The spirit lies in the forest. Scarlet flung the book onto the ground. Scarlet went out to find the spirit. A storm came upon Scarlet. Scarlet searched for ages and she found the golden light on a mountain. Woosh, woosh, the wind blew. Scarlet got blown back. She tripped over a rock. She fell down the mountain. She was unconcious. When she woke up, she was lost. She called out. No one heard her.
