Chapter One

Half time was coming up.

We were up by one goal,

but the other team were coming back hard.

Being a striker it was my job to score.

The ball was at the other end of the field,

but I could see it was slowly making its way

towards this end.

Our team tackled and got the ball.

Nannie passed the ball and I volleyed it.

When back on the ground

I twisted around and scored!

The crowd went wild.

It was just in time because the half time whistle blew.

Chapter Two

During the break our manager had a serious pep talk

with us to encourage us to do even better.

When half time ended

we went into the middle of the pitch

and it was my turn to take the free kick.

I positioned myself for the kick.

All of a sudden wrestling posts

shot out of the ground

and the whole stadium turned into a wrestling arena.

And this is where my story really begins!

The world famous John Cena came out of the tunnel

and challenged me to a fight.

I accepted the challenge and we got ready to fight.

But I needed to change fast

as I was still in my football gear.

I ran into the changing room

to put on my wrestling gear

when all of a sudden

I got grabbed from behind by two bodyguards

who worked for John Cena.

They locked me in a cupboard so I couldn’t fight.

My friend Max came and unlocked the door.

We fought them back.

We were victorious

and I was now extra determined

to beat John Cena fairly and squarely.

I ran out of the tunnel

and chased John Cena around the ring,

and he ran home crying to his mother.

I was now the WWE Champion.

‘Football Mad’ by Jake

Chapter One

The Footballer

Jake is playing for Barcelona.

He keeps scoring

and so the score is already 3-2 to Barcelona.

They are playing against West Ham Utd.

As it is coming up to half time a player

from West Ham scores a lucky goal,

the crowd goes wild jumping

and cheering as the player celebrates.

West Ham can hear the manager for Barcelona

shouting and screaming his head off at the players.

The only words that they can make out are

“Get out there and score some goals”.

Chapter Two

Arsenal vs Sparta Praha

The referee blows the whistle

to start the second half

and straight away there is an injury.

Jake went down in the box

but he got back up to take the penalty.

The goalie saved it

but there was still the possibility of a rebound goal.

Jake goes for a diving header

and when he hits it,

it goes up in the air,

hits off of the post

and he just about kicks it in

with his foot.

He gets up

and the crowd goes wild

and as he celebrates

he does a frontflip

and then a backflip.

Within minutes he scores again.

The match was pretty straight foward from there.

The final whistle blew and the crowd went mad,

jumping and singing Barcelona.

The commentator even says

“What a win, Jake is just unstoppable when he gets going”.

Chapter Three

As the teams are entering the tunnel,

someone throws something at Jake.

It hit him in the head which knocked him unconscious.

Later in hospital I woke up.

On the TV

I see Lionel Messi scoring a winning goal.

The manager runs onto the pitch

and starts to hug and kiss Messi

and throw him up in the air.

The match was pretty straight foward from there,

the final whistle blew

and the crowd went mad, jumping and singing Barcelona.

The commentator even says

“What a win, Messi is just unstoppable when he gets going”

Then I realised I had just had the greatest dream.

My name is Jake and I am football mad.

When I grow up I hope to be as successful as Lionel Messi.

Week 4: Student Blogging Challenge 2013: Adding images using Compfight

We are doing the Student Blogging Challenge 2013

This is the fourth week and

this week’s Blogging Challenge’

gives us the ‘freedom to choose’

what we, 2nd Class, Room 6

want to write about.

You can read about this week’s challenge

if you click on this link 🙂

This week we are asked

to use images in our post

and were advised how to install

and use Compfight

We had learned about Creative Commons

From The Edublogger: Guide to Copyright Fair Use and Creative Commons

and we had heard a very interesting

story about a boy who got into bother when

he used a very ordinary picture

of a slice of salami

without permission

so we are always very careful

about using images on this blog.

Mostly we use ones

we have made ourselves.

But when we have used other people’s

we have always used

Creative Commons and

are always careful to say

who the picture really belongs to.

Well the children in 2nd Class Room 6

really love writing.

When given the opportunity to write

about something they like to write about

of course they always write about

something they are very interested in.

For example here are two very different stories

written by students in 2nd Class Room 6

The first one is

“Star Wars”

by Zac Berry

Chapter One

Milky Way / Via Láctea

Commander Rex was guarding his ship.

It seemed it would be a quiet day,

but then the Commander saw some enemy ships

heading for the sun.

There was a huge laser cannon

on the back of one of the ships.

That worried Commander Rex.

He guessed that the commanders

of the enemy ships planned

to use the cannon to shoot the sun

so they could control the whole world

and all the planets.

Chapter Two

Commander Rex called his clone troopers

to board the enemy ships

and to shoot down any that tried to escape.

The enemy ships saw Commander Rex’s fleet coming

and they decided that

they would shoot them down first.

Then, Commander Rex called in

the star fighter torpedo cannons

to shoot down the enemy ships.

They succeeded in that mission.

Chapter Three

Commander Rex went down to the prisoners

from the enemy ships to find out what

the enemby ship captains were up to.

He asked them to speak up and tell him

what they were doing.

No one confessed so Commander Rex

took them all prisoner

until he worked out what to do with them.

As they left the room an envelope

fell out of one of their pockets.

In the envelope was the whole plan.

It said that the protector droids

would come and shoot Commander Rex’s ship.

Luckily Commander Rex was alerted to this plan.

So the friendly airships were alerted also.

They're here.....

They came in and flattened the protecter droids.

And so ends another successful mission

by Commander Rex.

The second story is called

“The Magical Tree”

and it is by Nicole

Chapter One

Once on a magical day,

there was a girl called Holly.

She went for a walk in the magical forest.

small enough to fit a little girl like Holly .

She went for a closer look.

She leaned down to see the door and stumbled in.

Isobel gave Holly a tour of the castle.

Holly was not paying attention

and went through another door.

“Help help!” said the dragon,

“What’s wrong?” said Holly.

“The Nutcracker locked me up in a cage.

Using Compfight was quick and easy.

The pictures  really brought

our stories to life.

It is good to have this new skill 🙂

Student Blogging Challenge 2013 – The Third Challenge – 10 Recycling Socks Ideas!

We are doing the Student Blogging Challenge 2013

This is the third week and

We found this week’s Blogging Challenge ‘challenging’ 😉

We were asked to think of ten ways of recycling socks.

You can read about the 3rd Challenge here.
First some maths!

How many socks do you use in  a year?

Over a lifetime how many is that?

In a family of four how many would that be?

How about in a neighbourhood

In a school of five hundred?

In a country?

In the world?

So we are sure you would agree

we need to do more with our old socks

rather than putting them in the bin.

We think that there must be

at least three types of odd sock.

The Oldies but Goodies

There is the very old and threadbare

It deserves to be treated with respect.

It has done its job well.

They are used to hard work

and won’t mind working some more.

The Lovelies

They are the very new, fashionable ones

that we love and then disaster we lose one.

The new job we can give these ones

can be a lot more glamorous

The Cuties

They are the really cute ones

that perhaps look almost new.

that Baby has grown out of them.

Wash very very well and then…

Wash them again.

That the socks are clean

and that they don’t smell is

really

REALLY important

for the success of these recycling ideas.

So what to do to recycle socks?

You could use them to:

1. dust and polish

2. clean blackboards or white boards

3. protect shoes when we do painting and decorating

4.  You have heard about a soap on a rope. How about a soap in a sock?

Put a bar of soap into a long sock  rub it and it will lather up.

5. The feet can be cut off the sock and they can be used as leg warmers

6. Tie a few together to use as a toy for your dog or your cat.

7. Stuffing: Cut old socks up into small pieces and use to stuff toys or pillows.

8. Make sock hand puppet

9. If you have babies just learning to crawl, take a long sock, cut the feet off and put the

footless sock over baby’s knees to help protect them and the clothes they are wearing.

10. Ice Pack: Fill with ice and put on the bump.

So where do socks disappear too.

It’s well known that washing machines and driers steal them.

Buy identical pairs of socks

and then you will be able to make a new pair with the odd ones.

We made a short comic using

Make Beliefs Comix

We called it:

Where do all the odd socks go?

Early this morning we got an email

from our friends in Foundation Class, out in Australia.

They had received the Easter card

we sent them by ordinary post.

Sometimes called ‘snail mail’,

sending things by post is

much slower, but to get

letters by post is fun.

 “Hi 2nd Class,

 What a beautiful surprise
we received from you all today.

It made my day!

The children were very excited too!

We have written about it on our blog

Later in the day, we heard from New Zealand.

Our St. Patrick’s Day card arrived safely in

The Student Blogging Challenge – 2nd Challenge

We are doing the Student Blogging Challenge 2013

This is the second week and

this week’s Blogging Challenge’

gives us the ‘freedom to choose’

what we, 2nd Class, Room 6

want to write about.

You can read about the

2nd challenge here.

As a class we talked about

what we are really interested in.

We ‘brainstormed’.

There are twenty nine of us,

so there were a lot of answers.

Then we wrote about what we are passionate about.

For example Cian said:

“Some of the things the children in the class

are interested in are really interesting like JC’s.

He said he was really interested in exploring.

My one was seeking my fortune.

By this I mean going to China and walking

all the way across the Great Wall of China

or going to the South Pole without catching frost bite.

But why stop there! I would love to visit Mars or Jupiter.

Someone that the boys and girls in 2nd Class, Room 6 follow

who is having a fantastic adventure

in outer space and is sharing it with us back here on Planet Earth is

the astronaut Chris Hadfield, who was recently made commander

of the International Space Station. We follow him on Twitter

and see the wonderful photographs he takes.

Here is a link to to his Twitter page

and here  are the answers to the questions

he is asked most frequently.

It makes for very interesting reading.

Seeking My Fortune

JC said:

If you don’t know what I mean

when I say I am interested in exploring

I will tell you.

Exploring is when you go around the world

and find a lot about the world .

If you are shy and you want to go around the world

you should probably go with a good friend.

If I became an explorer I would probably be on TV

because I am not that shy.

My favourite part of exploring

is looking for amazing animals especially sea creatures.

That’s what I am passionate about. What about you?

This is JC’s cartoon:

Q: What does Chris Hadfield and the Ladybird have in common?

Answer:

As you know Commander Chris Hadfield

is aboard the International Space Centre.

He is orbiting the Earth.

Lady Bug Note Generators

…in 1999 we four fine ladybirds were sent

into space in NASA’s space shuttle.

We were sent out there with a picnic of our favourite food.

Do you know what that is?

Yes you are correct,

it is greenfly otherwise known as aphids.

We were sent to outer space

because there is zero-gravity there

Scientists wanted to study how to aphids

could escape from their predators

without being able to jump using gravity.

On Earth we climb up a stalk to capture greenfly.

The greenfly fall off of the plant using gravity to escape.

With zero gravity, the greenfly couldn’t escape.

We had a good trip.

We feasted on greenfly in the zero gravity.

So in answer to the question, both Chris Hadfield

and ladybirds have been in space.

Impossible

We got this information about

ladybirds in space from

 ‘Ladybug’ on Enchanted Learning

Short Interview with Bill (from ‘Bill’s New Frock’ by Anne Fine) using SMS Generator

2nd Class Room 6 are always looking

for new and interesting ways to present their work.

So we couldn’t wait to try out the SMS Generator

recommended on Seomra Ranga.com

For homework Teacher had asked us

to write an interview with Bill,

the main character from Anne Fine’s book

‘Bill’s New Frock’.

Bill wakes up one morning to find

he has turned into a girl.

He spends his day discovering

that boys and girls are treated differently.

This is Fiona’s interview,

and we are sure you will agree that

this new format is a great way to present it.

Well done Fiona. Good work 🙂

Following on from ‘Bill’s New Frock’ by Anne Fine: An Interesting Survey

2nd Class, Room 6 have just finished a novel

by Anne Fine called ‘Bill’s New Frock’.

In it, the main character, Bill wakes up one morning

to find that he has changed into a girl overnight.

The story is interesting in that Bill observes

how boys can be treated differently to girls.

Following on from reading ‘Bill’s New Frock’

2nd Class, Room 6 did an interesting exercise

about the jobs that men and women do.

First they listened to the following story:

‘One fine Monday morning,

a parent and child were walking to school.

Suddenly there was a screech of brakes

and an enormous thud.

A car and a motorcycle had collided.

The driver of the car got out

and went to see if the motorcyclist was OK.

Two guards came and an ambulance.

The ambulance driver drove quickly

and brought the motorcyclist to hospital.

The doctor and nurses did their jobs well

and the motorcyclist made a speedy recovery.

The children were asked to draw a picture from the story.

Then they were asked whether

the people in the story were male or female.

Though it is probably of note that there were

sixteen boys and twelve girls in the class that day,

the results were interesting.

Considered by the children to be:

 Character in story                             Male               Female
 Child  8  20
 Parent  7  21
 Car driver  21  7
 Motorcyclist  26  2
 Guards  26  2
 Ambulance Driver  27  1
 Doctor  25  3
 Nurse  0 28

When the class talked about this afterwards,

they agreed that they had met female doctors,

and guards and male nurses.

Teacher sees a little change since she first

did this survey with an all girls class

twenty years ago. On that occasion the data

looked like this:

 Character in story                             Male               Female
 Child  0  30
 Parent  0  30
 Car driver  24  6
 Motorcyclist  29  1
 Guards  29  1
 Ambulance Driver  29  1
 Doctor  29  1
 Nurse  0  30

She wonders what the survey would look like

in twenty years time.

Student Blogging Challenge 2013 – The First Challenge

We are doing the Student Blogging Challenge 2013

You can read about it here

The First Challenge

“If you could meet 10 people,

alive or dead,

who would they be?

Make a list of the people

and include one question

you would ask them

in an interview.

You cannot repeat the same question”.

After much debate,

the ten people that

2nd Class, Room 6 chose were:

1. Chris Hadfield

(Chief Engineer of the International Space Centre)

What food craving do you have while you are orbiting the earth?

Braille

2. Louis Braille (1809-1852)

(Inventor of Braille, a system of ‘reading’ for the blind)

When you dream do you see what you are dreaming about?

3. St Brigid (450-525AD)

The female patron saint of Ireland

How do you become a saint?

Listen to us sing a song about St. Brigid here.

4. Anne Fine, the writer

Did you ever have teachers

like the ones you described in your book

‘The Country Pancake’?

5. Francesca Simon, the author

Why was your character Horrid Henry so horrid?

6. Dorothy Edwards, who wrote

‘My Naughty Little Sister’ and other stories.

Did you have a Naughty Little Sister or were you one yourself?

We tried to draw Mondrian's 'Gray Tree'

7. Mondrian, the artist, (1872-1944)

How did you think of such a unique picture ‘The Gray Tree’

This is our version of Georgia O'Keeffe's 'The Lawrence Tree'

8. Georgia O’Keeffe, 1887-1986

the painter who specialized

in colourful, large scale pictures

of flowers and nature.

When did you discover your talent?

9. Goliath, the biblical giant

who was defeated in battle

by the shepherd boy David

How did it feel to lose to a lad smaller than you?

10. Brian O Driscoll Irish rugby legend.

What do you think of girls playing rugby?

She is the Colour of Bronze… (Thoughts for Mother’s Day)

We wrote these poems in groups in class for Mother’s Day

To Our Mums

If my mother was a sound,
she would be a soft breeze
If she was a flower

she would be a tiger lily
She is the colour of bronze
because she is strong and beautiful
She would be like soft bread
She is a lioness
because she protects her young

She is summer all year round

My Mum
If my mother was a sound
she would be snow falling
because she is quiet and pretty.
She is the colour of the summer sky
She is strawberries and cream
because that is my favourite
She would be a snow leopard
because she is protective of her cubs
She is Christmas all year round

For Mother’s Day
She is the sound of the dishwasher closing

Have YOU seen any ladybirds? ‘Signs of Spring’ Twitter Project

Lady Bug Note Generators
It has been quite cold

in Greystones so far this Spring

and we haven’t seen any ladybirds yet.

Next week we are going to learn what

Chris Hadfield and ladybirds have in common.

Can you guess?

Eircom.net Press Release: Eircom Junior Spider Award 2013: Winners Announced

This is the feedback we got from the judges:

“With a diverse range of content

and media types from podcasts to polls,

this blog impressed judges on many levels.

A huge amount of work has been put in

by students to create a blog

which shows off their own work

in a very interactive way.

Readers could easily share their thoughts

and comments were frequently left on posts.

The name of the blog reflects the idea

that every child should be included

and this comes across on the blog.”

We still find it hard to believe.

Our blog is young and our students are only seven and eight.

The standard of the other entries was so high

so we had no expectation of success.

We were just so delighted to be shortlisted

and to have a day out.

That we did better than that, even now,

a few days later we find quiet unreal.

It might have been a dream

except we have seen the great photos on Flick’r

and Conor McNally’s news report on News2day.

Participating in the Eircom Junior Spider Awards

gave us a great opportunity.

It prompted us to look at our blog more carefully

and think about how it could be improved

so as to fulfill the criteria of the award,

particularly in terms of better navigation

and interacting with others beyond the class and the school.

It is a better blog as a result.

We got great ideas in terms of features and design

from the other excellent entries and

got some good advice on the day too

which will help us to get even more out of blogging.

We would like to thank all the people that helped us,

especially both 4th classes, Room 11 and 12

who visited our blog and made many comments,

our friends on Twitter, especially those involved with

William Chamberlain’s ingenious concept

Update 8th March 2013

Signs of Spring Twitter Project chirpstory

Our First Confession

Saturday 2nd March 2013 was a very special day.

We made our First Confession in Holy Rosary Church.

Our family and friends were there.

It was a happy day.

We had prepared well

at school with Teacher

and at home with our parents.

We had practiced the readings, songs and prayers.

We learned about the Lost Sheep and The Good Shepherd.

Our friend Paul, who works in the parish,

made a sacred space for us on the altar.

In the space was the shepherd and the sheep

that Paul had brought to class one day.

The singing bowl that we love was there too.

On Friday we all lit candles

and said a prayer that everything would go well.

Everything did go well.

The sun was shining and the sky was blue.

The ceremony was at 12.30 in Holy Rosary Church

with Father Liam, Father Denis and Father Owen.

Our parents brought us up and introduced us to the priest.

We told the priest about the times we didn’t show love.

He told us that God Our Father in Heaven forgives us.

That was a good feeling. We felt really happy.

Amy said she felt ‘lighter’

JC said he felt ‘amazing’

Tadhg said he felt ‘refeshed’.

Senan said he felt like ‘a clean white shirt

that had just been through the washing machine’.

Nicole said she felt ‘closer to God’

Alice said she felt that she was more ‘grown up’.

When we walked back down the church

and we felt that we were walking on air.

It was a good feeling.
